A 77-year-old woman dies in a fire caused by an explosion

A 77-year-old woman died Tuesday after an explosion in a building in the Bronx, New York, caused a major fire and the partial collapse of the apartment block. This is the second incident in the neighborhood less than three miles from the one earlier this year that killed 19 people.

A 77-year-old woman dies in a fire caused by an explosion

The city’s Police Department has confirmed the death of the woman, while two others, aged 68 and 82, are in stable condition, according to NBC.

Also, the agency has detailed that five members of the Corps have suffered smoke inhalation poisoning, so they have also been transported to hospitals. Eyewitnesses told NBC that they heard at least two explosions followed by flames and that, later, ashes began to fall from the building.

A gas leak was behind the two explosions and the fire in the New York building

It was initially suggested that the causes of the flames could be related to a gas leak, although the energy company responsible for supplying the building has acknowledged that it has no evidence of this having occurred.

This incident took place less than five kilometers from the area where, at the beginning of the month, another large fire took place, claiming the lives of 17 people.
