The Aurora Police Department confirmed the fatal incident in a statement, noting it occurred around 4 p.m. Sunday at the Town Center Mall in Aurora.
Police and firefighters were called to the scene after receiving a report of a child who had fallen from the second floor to the second floor, according to the statement.
Police said an initial investigation determined the 2-year-old boy was being held by his father at the top of the escalator when the child was thrown forward.
Witnesses at the mall spoke to KCNC after the incident, and some said they saw the boy lying on the floor unconscious before emergency responders took him away.
“I was in one of the shoe stores and I heard a lot of screaming, I heard a lady screaming, and then out of nowhere, the owner of the store came running out,” Cesar Solorzano told the media outlet.
“I was talking on the phone and I heard him say that something had happened and that he couldn’t close the store because he had guests. And then he looked at me, told me what had happened, that a little boy had fallen off the escalator,” he continued.
Following the incident, the child was taken to a local hospital, but died Monday morning, police confirmed in their statement.
